History has labeled Asian Pacific Americans (APAs) with many names – “chinks,” “coolies,” and “model minorities.” Today, many in the media and academia refer to us as the “Sleeping Giant.

Tasked to mine the mountains and build railroads in the 1800s, faced with adversity and hostility through discrimination and exclusionary laws, the “Sleeping Giant” has awakened and is now the fastest growing ethnic minority in the nation. The “Sleeping Giant” is a term coined to describe the emergence of APAs in politics and all aspects of American life.
