Gregory Cendana has become the first openly gay man and first Filipino elected to chair the US National Council of Asian Pacific Americans (NCAPA).
Founded in 1996, NCAPA is a coalition of 31 national Asian Pacific American organizations representing the interests of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities to provide a national voice on policy issues and priorities.
Cendana was already the executive director of the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance – one of NCAPA’s member organizations – and will serve as NCAPA chair for two years before the group meets to hold another election.
‘I [am] truly humbled to be elected as the next NCAPA chair,’ Cendana told Asian Journal.
‘We, as a council, are in a unique political moment and are poised to make some major advancements for our community. With new resources, we have been building our capacity over the last couple of years and are ready to take it to the next level.’
Cendana told Asian Journal that one of his priorities as NCAPA chair would be advocating for the passage of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act which would ban discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity in employment by businesses that employ more than 14 people.
